Corby Welch & Nina Warren score a triumphant joint house debut in Shanghai as « Tristan und Isolde »

As part of the project  « Bayreuth in Shanghai », a cooperation between the Bayreuth Festival and Shanghai Grand Theatre, Corby Welch and Nina Warren made a triumphant house debut at Shanghai Opera as Tristan and Isolde respectively.

« In last night’s performance, Corby Welch, who played Tristan, had a powerful voice that left a deep impression on the audience. His wide range and rich timbre made him very comfortable in handling difficult passages. He interpreted Tristan’s inner pain, struggle and desire in detail. When he expressed his love and contradictions for Isolde in the play, his singing was full of power, and every high note seemed to be the character’s inner cry, which perfectly matched the emotional context of the music, allowing the audience to deeply feel Tristan’s painful choice between love and loyalty.

Nina Warren, who plays Isolde, has become the interpreter of many classic opera roles with her highly recognizable voice and delicate performance. When singing long sentences, her breath is long and steady, and every note is clear and full of charm, as if telling the emotional waves deep in Isolde’s heart. Not only that, Nina Warren’s performance on stage is very contagious. The perfect coordination of her eyes, body movements and singing vividly presents Isolde’s complex mental journey from her initial passionate pursuit of love, to the pain when facing difficulties, and finally to the realization of spiritual transcendence in the « death of love ».
