Nicolas Courjal

Nicolas Courjal studied with mezzo Jane Berbié. He was a memebr of the ensembles of  Paris Opéra-Comique and of the Wiesbaden Hessisches Staatstheater.

He has since appeared at major operatic stages such as Paris Opéra-Bastille and Théâtre du Châtelet, Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Sferisterio di Macerata, Maestranza di Sevilla, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Chorégies d’Orange, Grand-Théâtre de Genève, Opéra de Lausanne, Opéra de Monte-Carlo and in Russia and Japan.

He sings all the lead roles of the bass repertoire including Filippo II/Don Carlo, King Mark/Tristan und Isolde, Hunding / Walküre, Gremin/Eugen Onegin, Fiesco/Simone Boccanegra, Pimen/Boris Godunov, Basilio/Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He is a recognized reference in the French  repertoire, that he has extensively sung throughout  the world : Narbal/Les Troyens, Gessler/Guillaume Tell, Méphisto /Faust and Damnation de Faust, Bertram/Robert le Diable, the 4 villains/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Golaud and Arkel / Pellés et Mélisande… under the baton of Myung-Whun Chung, Antonio Pappano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Michel Plasson, James Conlon, Alain Altinoglu, John-Elliot Gardiner…

Recently he sang the title role of Boito’s Mefistofele in Toulouse, Marcel / Les Huguenots in Marseille, Gremin / Eugen Onegin in Brussels, Damnation de Faust in Oslo and in Monte Carlo,  Escamillo / Carmen in Rouen, Raimond / Lucie de Lammermoor at Aix-en-Provence Festival, Nilakantha / Lakmé in Strasbourg, Zaccaria / Nabucco in Lausanne.

This season he  sings Zaccaria / Nabucco at Capitole de Toulouse, Méphisto / Faust at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Jeanne au Bûcher by Honegger at Paris Philharmonie, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and Frankfurt Alte Oper, the Father / Louise by Charpentier at Aix-en-Provence Festival. Later he will sing Louise at Lyon Opera, the title roles of Don Quichotte by Massenet in Lausanne and of Don Giovanni in Toulouse. In 2026 he will make his debut at Teatro alla Scala as Escamillo / Carmen.

His vast discography includes Petitgirard’s Elephant Man, Joncières’ Dimitri, David’s Herculanum, Berlioz’s Les Troyens and Damnation de Faust (Warner) as well as the DVDs of Carmen and Guillaume Tell with the Royal Opera House.
