Italian conductor and composer Andrea Molino has established himself as one of today’s leading interpreters of twentieth- and twenty-first-century repertoire, while maintaining a distinguished career in the core operatic canon. Renowned for his versatility and his close collaboration with many of today’s foremost stage directors and composers, he has appeared at major opera houses and festivals across Europe and Australia.
Born in Turin, Andrea Molino studied composition and conducting in Turin, Milan, Venice and Paris. Alongside his conducting career, he has developed an acclaimed international reputation as a composer, creating large-scale multidisciplinary works combining orchestra, voices, electronics and multimedia.
His operatic repertoire ranges from Mozart and Verdi to Berg, Bartók, Shostakovich and contemporary opera. Recent highlights include Heiner Goebbels’ Surrogate Cities at the Ravenna Festival, a work he has also conducted at the Edinburgh International Festival; Berg’s Wozzeck directed by William Kentridge, Shostakovich’s The Nose directed by Barrie Kosky, and Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle at the Sydney Opera House; Szymanowski’s Król Roger directed by Mariusz Treliński and the world premiere of Mikael Karlsson’s Melancholia at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm; the opening concert of the Chigiana International Festival in Siena with Luciano Berio’s Coro featuring Tabea Zimmermann; the world premiere of Cathy Marston’s The Cellist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; and Carmen at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse.
A long-standing collaborator with Opera Australia, he has conducted productions including Król Roger (Green Room Award 2018), Carmen, Tosca, La bohème, Macbeth and Un ballo in maschera, several staged by Alex Ollé and Kasper Holten. At Teatro La Fenice in Venice, he conducted the world premieres of Luca Mosca’s Signor Goldoni and Claudio Ambrosini’s Il Killer di Parole (libretto by Daniel Pennac), inaugurated the theatre’s 2010 concert season with the world premiere of Bruno Maderna’s Requiem—later awarded the Premio Abbiati—and opened the 2005 Venice Biennale with Goebbels’ Surrogate Cities.
As a symphonic conductor, Andrea Molino has appeared with orchestras including the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Brussels Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Swedish Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Bochumer Symphoniker, Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and the Orchestre National de Lyon. His engagements have taken him to venues and festivals including the Vienna Konzerthaus, Berliner Festspiele, Edinburgh International Festival, Beijing Opera House, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, the Sydney Festival, Brisbane Festival, Copenhagen Opera Festival, RomaEuropa Festival, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Opéra National de Nancy and Staatstheater Darmstadt.
Upcoming engagements include the revival of Mikael Karlsson’s Melancholia at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm and concerts at the Chigiana International Festival in Siena dedicated to the centenary of Hans Werner Henze, featuring works by Henze, Feldman, Rihm and Kurtág with violist Tabea Zimmermann.
As a composer, Andrea Molino regularly conducts his own works. Recent premieres include The Garden of Forking Paths (Turin, 2021), The Sense of the Place – Montepulciano at the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano (2022), and La vérité, pas toute, a large-scale work for 32 voices, eight percussionists, electronics and video, premiered at the Chigiana International Festival in Siena in 2023.
