French soprano Chantal Santon Jeffery is internationally recognised for the exceptional versatility of her artistry, encompassing Baroque, Classical, Romantic and contemporary repertoire with equal authority. Admired for the warmth, flexibility and expressive richness of her voice, as well as for her compelling dramatic presence, she has established herself as one of the leading interpreters of the French lyric repertoire while maintaining an unusually broad artistic horizon. Her extensive repertoire spans more than three centuries of opera, embracing the heroines of Mozart—including Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, Fiordiligi, La Contessa and Sandrina—as well as Senta in the French version of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer, the Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, the title role in Haydn’s Armida, and numerous contemporary creations. She is equally renowned for her interpretations of the French Baroque repertoire, having appeared in works by Lully, Campra, Rameau, Boismortier, Montéclair, Colin de Blamont and Purcell, while also championing rarely performed nineteenth-century operas and operettas by Hervé, Offenbach, Messager and Gassmann.
Throughout her career she has appeared at many of the world’s leading concert halls and opera houses, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Cité de la Musique – Philharmonie de Paris, Teatro La Fenice, BOZAR Brussels, the Palau de la Música Catalana, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Prague’s Rudolfinum, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, as well as with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Yokohama Opera.
Her recent engagements illustrate the remarkable diversity of her artistic activity. They include the title role in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in Avignon and Reims, Lully’s Phaëton in Nice, Colin de Blamont’s Le Caprice d’Érato in Helsinki, Mozart’s Mass in C minor in Budapest, Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias and Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and in Nice, Die Walküre at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and her debut at the Festival Verdi di Parma in a concert programme devoted to Nono, Verdi and Schönberg, further demonstrating the breadth of her musical interests.
Future engagements include Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni with ARCAL, adding another of Mozart’s great dramatic heroines to a repertoire in which she has long excelled.
