Quel plaisir de retrouver sur scène Nicolas Courjal au meilleur de sa forme vocale dans le rôle de Nilakantha ! Pour ses débuts à l’Opéra du Rhin, cet artiste breton qui excelle dans les rôles sombres trouve dans le personnage du brahmane un emploi qui lui convient idéalement, tant sur le plan dramatique que musical. Méconnaissable sous un maquillage cérusé qui lui couvre le visage et la poitrine, il réussit à rendre crédible ce prêtre radicalisé, obtus et fermé à toute forme de métissage. Des brahmanes hindous, il a réussi à faire sienne la gestuelle très codifiée tandis que la noirceur de son timbre de basse convient idéalement aux imprécations et aux anathèmes qui fusent de la bouche de Nilakantha. Au deuxième acte, les stances « Lakmé, ton doux regard se voile » sont interprétées avec un art consommé du chant legato sans pour autant que le chanteur cède à la mièvrerie puis, dans la scène des conjurés, Nicolas Courjal retrouve des accents glaçants d’autorité : le crescendo avec lequel il souligne la phrase « Et dans un cercle infranchissable » pétrifie le spectateur et porte la signature d’un immense tragédien.
What a pleasure to find Nicolas Courjal on stage at his best vocal form in the role of Nilakantha! For his debut at the Opéra du Rhin, this Breton artist who excels in dark roles finds in the character of the Brahmin a role that suits him ideally, both dramatically and musically. Unrecognizable under his white makeup covering his face and chest, he succeeds in making this radicalized priest credible, obtuse and closed to any form of miscegenation. From the Hindu Brahmins, he managed to make the very codified gestures his own, while the darkness of his bass timbre is ideally suited to the imprecations and anathemas that burst from the mouth of Nilakantha. In the second act, the stanzas « Lakmé, your sweet gaze is veiled » are interpreted with consummate art of legato singing without the singer giving in to sentimentality then, in the scene of the conspirators, Nicolas Courjal finds chilling accents of authority: the crescendo with which he underlines the phrase “And in an impassable circle” petrifies the spectator and bears the signature of an immense tragedian.
