Adorján Pataki
Romanian-Hungarian lirico spinto tenor Adorján Pataki has established himself as one of the leading dramatic voices of Central Europe. Endowed with a burnished, bronze-coloured timbre, ringing high notes and an instinctive affinity for the great Italian repertoire, he has built an impressive career in Verdi and Puccini while increasingly expanding into the heroic French and Wagnerian repertoire. The Telegraph praised his distinctive vocal personality, describing him as possessing “a voice with shades of Alan Rickman in speech and John Shirley-Quirk in song — that certainly catches the ear.”
Born in Romania in 1981, Adorján Pataki graduated from the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca under Marius Vlad before continuing his studies in Paris with the legendary mezzo-soprano Viorica Cortez. Since 2005 he has been a leading member of the Hungarian Opera of Cluj, while also maintaining close artistic relationships with the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.
His international career has taken him throughout Europe, with appearances in Germany, Austria, Norway, the Czech Republic, Spain and Hungary. He has performed at theatres including Oper Bonn, Theater Aachen, Theater Chemnitz, Theater Erfurt, the Norwegian National Opera in Bergen, the National Theatre Prague, and the Oper im Steinbruch Festival in St. Margarethen.
A specialist of the Italian lirico spinto repertoire, his roles include Cavaradossi (Tosca), Manrico (Il trovatore), Don Carlo, Radamès (Aida), Foresto (Attila), Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut), Rodolfo (La bohème), Alfredo Germont (La traviata) and Ruggero (La rondine), alongside numerous performances of the major Verdi repertoire.
Recent highlights include Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera and Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in Budapest, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut in Cluj-Napoca and Budapest, as well as Rodolfo, Radamès, Turiddu, Ruggero and Cavaradossi in productions throughout Hungary and Romania.
His career is now entering an exciting new phase with increasingly dramatic repertoire. Recent seasons have seen his acclaimed role debut in the title role of Samson in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava.
Future engagements include Cavaradossi at the Oper im Steinbruch Festival in St. Margarethen, Don Carlo in Cluj-Napoca, and one of the most eagerly awaited milestones of his career: his first Otello, confirming his evolution toward the great heroic tenor repertoire.
