Clémentine Margaine

Widely regarded as one of the leading dramatic mezzo-sopranos of her generation, Clémentine Margaine has established herself as one of the very few French singers to enjoy a career at the highest international level. Celebrated for the richness of her timbre, the power of her voice, the compelling authority of her stage presence and the intelligence of her interpretations, she is now recognized as one of today’s foremost exponents of the French and Italian repertories.

A graduate of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, where she studied with Chantal Mathias, she was named an Adami Classical Revelation in 2009 and received the Victoire de la Musique Classique award as Lyric Revelation of the Year in 2011. After joining the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, she made her debut there in the title role of Carmen, a performance that proved to be the defining moment of her career and led to invitations from the world’s leading opera houses.

Since then, she has appeared as Bizet’s heroine at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Opéra national de Paris, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Opera Australia in Sydney, the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Washington National Opera, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro Real in Madrid, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, establishing herself as one of the most acclaimed Carmens of her generation.

Her repertoire has continued to expand and now encompasses the principal dramatic mezzo-soprano roles. She has performed Amneris (Aida) in Berlin, Munich, Verona, Sydney and Barcelona; Azucena (Il trovatore) in Rome, London, Hamburg, Madrid, Genoa, Vienna, Verona and Parma; Princess Eboli (Don Carlo) in Munich, Dallas, Chicago and Verona; Léonor (La Favorite) in Munich and Barcelona; Charlotte (Werther) in Buenos Aires, Liège and Vienna; Dalila (Samson et Dalila), Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust) and Fidès (Le Prophète) in Berlin; Dulcinée (Don Quichotte) in Berlin and Chicago; Adalgisa (Norma) in Madrid; Concepción (L’Heure espagnole) and the Sphinx in Œdipe in Paris; Gertrude (Hamlet) in Turin and Paris; Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde) in Málaga; Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) in Lyon and New York; and the Princesse de Bouillon (Adriana Lecouvreur) in Lyon, Paris and at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

Alongside her operatic career, Clémentine Margaine is also a highly sought-after concert and recital artist. Whether performing the great cycles of French mélodie, the German Lied or the orchestral masterpieces of Berlioz, Mahler, Mendelssohn and Verdi, she brings the same musical insight, expressive depth and dramatic commitment that have made her one of the outstanding voices of her generation.
