Frédérique Friess

French soprano Frédérique Friess has remarkably moved from light-lyric roles in which she was nominated best young singer of 2001 by Opernwelt magazine, to lirico spinto and jugendliche dramatische soprano parts.

Thanks to her impeccable technique, blazing high notes and long tessiture, Frédérique made a name for herself in the most demanding soprano roles : Abigaille /Nabucco (Košice, Neuchâtel, Budweis), Leonore/Fidelio and Ada/Die Feen (Košice), Elvira/Ernani and the title role of Genoveva (Ostrava), Desdemona/Otello Prague, Passau), Tatyana/Eugen Onegin (Mannheim)… Other roles include Contessa/Le Nozze di Figaro (Prague National Theatre, Passau), Mimí/La Bohème (Ostrava National Theatre)…

She first sang Zerlina/Don Giovanni, Pamina/Die Zauberflöte, Sonja/Lehár’s Zarewitsch, Servilia/Clemenza di Tito, Despina/Così fan tutte, Sophie/Der Rosenkavalier, Maria/Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann... in Hamburg, Mannheim, Paris, Rennes, Roma, Palermo, Venice or Zagreb…

Recent performances include Tatyana/Eugen Onegin, Valentine/Les Huguenots, Gerhilde/Walküre, Erste Dame/Zauberflöte in Mannheim. Upcoming : Traviata in Switzerland.

From 2006, Frédérique Friess has closely collaborated with the SWR, with whom she has made recordings of works by Dmitry Shostakovich, Arnold Schönberg and Gustav Mahler. Highlights include performances at the Laiesz Musikhalle in Hamburg with Christoph Schöner, with the MDR Sinfonieorchester conducted by Howard Arman, at the Europäische Wochen festival in Passau or at the Smetana Hall of Prague’s Municipal House with the Prague Symphony Orchestra (Ravel’s Shéhérazade).

Frédérique holds a degree in German literature and philology, graduated from the Strasbourg National Conservatory and the
Musikhochschule of Stuttgart. She is a laureate of numerous competitions including the “New Voices” Gaetano Fraschini
international competition in Pavia, and the Hugo Wolf Wettbewerb.
