Michel Plasson is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost interpreters of the French orchestral and operatic repertoire. After graduating from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and winning First Prize at the Besançon International Conducting Competition, Michel Plasson pursued advanced studies in the United States with Charles Munch, Pierre Monteux, Erich Leinsdorf and Leopold Stokowski, laying the foundations for an exceptional international career.
His artistic legacy is inseparable from the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, whose Music Director he was from 1968 to 2003. During these thirty-five years, he transformed the orchestra into one of Europe’s leading ensembles, establishing its international reputation through landmark performances, acclaimed international tours and an award-winning recording catalogue that remains a reference for the French repertoire.
Michel Plasson has appeared with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, Teatro alla Scala, Opernhaus Zürich, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Opera House and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. In July 2026, Michel Plasson returned to the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse for a series of special concerts with the Orchestre National du Capitole, marking an emotionally significant reunion with the orchestra he shaped over three decades. The concerts were greeted with exceptional enthusiasm by audiences and musicians alike, reaffirming the unique artistic bond that continues to unite the maestro with one of France’s finest orchestras.
Michel Plasson’s extensive discography, comprising more than one hundred recordings, has received numerous international distinctions and has played a decisive role in the worldwide rediscovery of French opera.
