Nadja Stefanoff

Soprano Nadja Stefanoff has established herself as one of the most exciting singing actresses of her generation. She was hailed as nothing less than “exceptional” for her recent role debuts as Fedora in Giordano’s Fedora at Oper Frankfurt, Marietta in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and the title role in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos at Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw.

Her extensive repertoire includes some of the most demanding dramatic soprano roles, among them Tosca in Puccini’s Tosca, Manon Lescaut in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, the title role in Bellini’s Norma, the title role in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, the title role in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, Marschallin in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre, Countess Almaviva in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, the title role in Janáček’s Katja Kabanowa, Elisabetta in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda, Agathe in Weber’s Der Freischütz, the title role in Cherubini’s Médée and Marta in Weinberg’s Die Passagierin (released on DVD by Naxos).

She has appeared on many of Europe’s leading stages, including the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, La Monnaie / De Munt in Brussels, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Komische Oper Berlin, Staatsoperette Dresden, the Staatstheater Kassel, Theater Bonn, Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, Oper Graz, Landestheater Innsbruck, Theater an der Wien and the National Opera Bergen.

During the 2026/27 season, Nadja Stefanoff returns to the Staatstheater Mainz for Elsa in Wagner’s Lohengrin, the title role in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos and Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff. She also appears as Sieglinde in Wagner’s Die Walküre in Luxembourg.

Born in Chemnitz to a family of Bulgarian origin, Nadja Stefanoff studied at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber and the Semperoper Dresden. After engagements with the ensembles of Theater Erfurt, Theater Bremen and Staatstheater Braunschweig, she joined the ensemble of the Staatstheater Mainz in 2014, where she has established herself as one of its leading dramatic sopranos.
