Vanessa Vasquez
Colombian-American soprano Vanessa Vasquez first came to international attention after winning the 2017 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She subsequently completed the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where she appeared in many of the leading lyric soprano roles, including Mimì (La bohème), Gilda (Rigoletto), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and Violetta (La traviata).
Recent highlights include her return to The Santa Fe Opera as the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro), her role debut as Micaëla (Carmen) with both Washington National Opera and Arizona Opera, and Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) with Arizona Opera.
She has made acclaimed company debuts as Liù (Turandot) with the Canadian Opera Company, Donna Anna with the Washington National Opera, Violetta with Arizona Opera and North Carolina Opera, and Mimì with both The Santa Fe Opera and Opera Philadelphia. Her professional operatic debut came in 2017 as Liù with Des Moines Metro Opera.
An accomplished concert artist, Vanessa Vasquez has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Bach’s Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, the New York Philharmonic in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, the New York Choral Society in Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and Voices of Ascension in Honegger’s King David and Poulenc’s Gloria. She was also featured by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin during the Academy of Music’s 60th Anniversary Gala.
Upcoming engagements include her role debut as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Arizona Opera, the cover of Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera, and a return to The Santa Fe Opera as Liù in Puccini’s Turandot.
Vanessa is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Sara Tucker Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation, First Prize at the Gerda Lissner Foundation Competition, the Licia Albanese Competition, the Giulio Gari Competition, the Loren L. Zachary Competition, and the Phoenix Opera Southwest Vocal Competition, where she also received the Audience Award.
A graduate of The Catholic University of America and UCLA, she performed Susanna in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) during her studies.
