Zachary McCulloch
New Zealand born tenor Zachary McCulloch completed his studies from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and has since performed with companies such as Opera Australia, Victorian Opera, Adelaide Festival, Landestheatre Linz and Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse.
Hailed to sing with “Italianate warmth”, Zachary has a ringing, full-bodied light-lyric tenor voice, with incredible high notes (up to high D as in Percy’s aria from Donizetti’s Anna Bolena). His roles include Oronte in Alcina, Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore, Ferrando in Così Fan Tutte, Almaviva / Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Ottavio / Don Giovanni, Tonio /La Fille di Régiment…
In 2023-2024 he made his debut at Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse in a shortened version of Zauberflöte as Tamino, sang in Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci in Linz, and made his debut at Martina Franca Festival as Flavio / Norma under Fabio Luisi and Aladino e la lampada magica by Rota.
This season, he will make his debut at Berlin Deutsche Oper in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , will be back at the Capitole of Toulouse for Tamino (and later for Weinberg’s Die Passagierin and Strauss ‘ Salome). He will also debute Nadir / Les Pêcheurs de perles for Opéra du Grand Sud and Gualtiero / Il Pirata in New Zealand.
Zachary was a studio artist in the State Opera of South Australia’s Opera Academy in 2021. In 2023, Zachary has been chosen by Nicole Car and Etienne Dupuis to sing Rodolfo in La Bohème in the production of the ICAV | Institut Canadien d’Art Vocal summer program.
