Corby Welch gelingt in dieser Inszenierung ein fulminantes Rollendebüt als Tristan. Mit strahlendem Heldentenor gestaltet er die Partie so sicher, als ob er sie schon zehnmal gesungen hätte. Auch bei der Premiere weiß er schon genau, wie er sich seine Kräfte einteilen muss. Teilweise schont er seine Stimme in den ersten Aufzügen hörbar, was man sonst kräftig kennt, wird bei ihm ganz zart, aber dafür trumpft er im Dritten mit einem äußerst kraftvollen Wahnsinn auf. Die manchmal doch sehr leisen Töne passen zudem zur Anlage der Figur: Dieser Tristan ist vom ersten Augenblick an panisch. Mag er nur vor Kurwenal und Brangäne noch selbstsicher und unnahbar wirken, allein mit Isolde will er nur eines: weg. Er sucht nach Auswegen, drückt sich in kleinste Ecken, um Abstand von der Frau zu gewinnen, deren Verlobten er einst getötet hat. In mancher Inszenierung wirkt Tristan neben Isolde etwas blass – hier ist er von Anfang an eine deutlich greifbare Figur.

Corby Welch makes a brilliant role debut as Tristan in this production. With a radiant heroic tenor, he organized the party as confidently as if it had already sung ten times. Even at the premiere, he already knows exactly how to allocate his strength. At times he spares his voice audibly in the first acts, what is otherwise strong becomes very tender with him, but in the third he comes across with an extremely powerful madness. The sometimes very quiet tones also fit the personality of the character: Tristan is panicked from the first moment. Even if he seems self-confident and aloof in front of Kurwenal and Brangäne, when alone with Isolde he only wants one thing: to get away. He looks for ways out, squeezes himself into the smallest corners to gain distance from the woman whose fiancé he once killed. In some productions, Tristan seems a bit pale next to Isolde – here he is a clearly tangible figure from the start.Opernmagazin

Tristan is Corby Welch. Welch is currently pursuing a career as a Wagner, and rightly so. Never reaching his limits vocally, right up to his murderous delusional outbursts in the third act, and with good diction, he also manages to play the role convincingly in terms of scenery. Corby Welch ist ein markant charakterisierender Tristan, dessen Stimme in liedhaft präzise artikulierten Passagen genauso trägt wie in den dramatisch-heldischen Ausbrüchen. Was er im mörderischen dritten Aufzug noch an vokalen Reserven zur Verfügung hatte, war mitreißend.
