André Heyboer
French baritone André Heyboer has established himself as one of the leading dramatic baritones of his generation, acclaimed for the warmth and power of his voice, his commanding stage presence and his compelling portrayals of the great French and Italian repertoire. Since making his professional debut at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse in 2005, he has enjoyed an international career that has taken him to many of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses and concert venues.
His engagements have brought him to the Opéra national de Paris, Opéra-Comique, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, the Theater an der Wien, the Prinzregententheater Munich, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, as well as the opera houses of Marseille, Montpellier, Lille, Dijon, Limoges, Monte-Carlo, Toulon, Avignon, Hong Kong and São Paulo.
Throughout his career he has collaborated with many of today’s leading conductors, including Marco Armiliato, Roberto Abbado, Fabio Carminati, Plácido Domingo, Dan Ettinger, Valery Gergiev, Daniel Oren, Carlo Rizzi, Leo Hussain, Evelino Pidò, Ulf Schirmer, Pinchas Steinberg and Alain Guingal. His stage partners have included distinguished directors such as Pierre Audi, Lilo Baur, Gilles Bouillon, Jean-Louis Grinda, Nicolas Joël, Andreas Kriegenburg, La Fura dels Baus, Giancarlo del Monaco, Yoshi Oida and Coline Serreau.
Possessing a richly coloured, powerful baritone with a brilliant upper register, André Heyboer has become particularly admired in the great Verdi and verismo repertoire. His extensive repertoire includes Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana), Tonio (Pagliacci), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), Athanaël (Thaïs), Zurga (Les Pêcheurs de perles), the High Priest of Dagon (Samson et Dalila), Nilakantha (Lakmé), Albert (Werther), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Iago (Otello), as well as the title roles in Nabucco and Macbeth. His combination of vocal authority and dramatic intensity has made him a sought-after interpreter of both the French Romantic and Italian dramatic repertoires.
Recent highlights include his acclaimed role debut as Scarpia in Tosca at the Opéra Grand Avignon, Miller in Verdi’s Luisa Miller in Tours, the Marquis de la Force in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites in Massy, and Don Carlo di Vargas in Verdi’s Ernani at the Buxton International Festival. During the 2025–2026 season, he sings the Sacristan in Tosca and covers the role of Scarpia at Opéra de Paris, and appear as Giorgio Germont in La traviata at the Buxton International Festival further consolidating his reputation as one of today’s foremost French dramatic baritones.
In the 2026-2027 season he is back at the Opéra de Paris for Polonius in Thomas’ Hamlet.
Alongside his stage career, André Heyboer has developed an important recording catalogue, notably championing the rediscovery of the French Romantic repertoire. His recordings for Palazzetto Bru Zane include Catel’s Les Bayadères and Gounod’s Cinq-Mars. He also recorded Michaël Levinas’ La Métamorphose, a release that received both the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros and the Prix de l’Académie Lyrique du Disque, confirming his versatility across both historical and contemporary repertoire.
Equally compelling in Verdi, French grand opera and twentieth-century repertoire, André Heyboer continues to be recognised for the rare combination of vocal generosity, stylistic refinement and dramatic commitment that has made him a favourite with audiences and opera houses throughout Europe.
